X-men movie series exist in Avengers movie universe?

I'm just wondering if the X-men movie franchise exists in the Iron-man/Hulk/Thor/Capt. America/Avengers movie universe. It's never really stated, and I was curious about this..and if so..it would have been kind interesting to see Wolverine and Saber-tooth appearing as cameos in the upcoming Capt. America movie.
