Most affordable AWD vehicle?

I have a 02 Range Rover and I'm heading to college in the fall, right now it is getting 13.5 mpg and I was looking at getting a more fuel efficient car. It has to have AWD, be reliable, get decent-good mpg, and it wouldn't hurt if it wasn't so expensive to maintain! I have about a $10,000 budget..please help!!!!
