Land rover free lander 2003?

hey guys...i wanna buy a suv this month...i love land rovers and cherokees...i'm a college student so everybody i know says that land rover and cherokee costs me too much after i buy...i found a land rover free lander 2003 it's 83k. and 2.5L...if i buy this car do i pay 500-600$ to auto service every month ? or do i pay too much for the gas ? everybody says i need to buy a honda civic,toyota camry or nissan altima....but i hate them...is it too risky to buy a land rover or cherokee for a college student ?
